Australia's captain Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not just his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

He mentioned that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
