Cancellieri Shows Brief Sparks of Genius in Positive Aspect for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy this past Saturday. The home side was losing against Torino, an opponent that had conceded a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season unraveling, or had there never been any cohesion maintaining its structure to start with? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, only for him to later acknowledge that the management had not mentioned a registration embargo they were about to receive for accounting issues. Speculation that he could resign were without basis, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club were just as chaotic in their performances as behind the scenes, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the rest of their initial five matches, which included the capital clash. At any given moment, observers have struggled to tell if they're getting better or collapsing.

Matteo's Surprising Presence

A single player continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio this year. He spent last season on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were advocating for him to stay there a while longer. The transfer ban forced a rethink. They were unable to weaken their team with no new signings.

He signed initially under Sarri's first spell, then a 20-year-old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left at the end of that season, subsequently claimed Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."

Finding His Natural Fit

Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to determine the exact type of his skill set. Labeled as a flank player upon signing, Cancellieri nevertheless spent most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
