European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
