People who experienced abuse by Catholic clergy have expressed fresh optimism after their initial meeting with Pope Leo at the Vatican.

The board president, heading the anti-abuse organization, stated that the pontiff's decision to meet with them so early in his leadership spoke volumes about his dedication to tackling the problem.

Worldwide Zero-Tolerance Approach Advocated

The group is advocating for a global strict approach that would permanently remove any clergy member who confesses to or is proven of sexually abusing a minor. This approach has been implemented in the United States.

The Pontiff recognized that there is "opposition in certain regions of the globe" to this proposal, according to the representative.

"We were all being realistic when we acknowledged that there is resistance," they remarked.

Inherited Issue

The new Pope, who took the role in spring, has inherited this persistent problem that has plagued the Catholic Church for decades.

Earlier attempts to resolve the problem included an historic meeting on paedophilia within the Church and changes to canon law to explicitly criminalize sexual abuse.

Personal Link

For Hickey, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, the drive for worldwide adoption of the policy is deeply meaningful. The North American advocate revealed they were victimized by a priest who was later moved between various churches.

"Hopefully this will establish the direction for his leadership, because we want to work with him," Hickey stated. "Both sides share the common objective, we want to eliminate clergy abuse."

Significant Encounter

Multiple members of the organization, which represents survivors and supporters from over thirty nations, engaged with the Pope in his official residence.

The meeting, initially planned for 20 minutes, extended to a full hour, during which the religious leader "primarily heard to us," according to the representative.

The Pope was characterized as "very understanding" when listening to the account of a woman victimized at a church-run institution for native youth in North America.

Hickey noted the Pope was "tender" about their own story and seemed "very humble, funny, and approachable."

"Survivors have consistently sought a seat at the table and I didn't feel like he was giving us lip service," they stated. "I felt like he was sincere, realistic, and very open and keen to collaborate with us."

Canon Law Reforms

The organization is hoping that changes to canon law will facilitate the adoption of the zero-tolerance policy worldwide.

They have consulted experts and compiled documents that they will present to the pontiff.

"He seemed engaged in looking at it," Hickey remarked.

Accountability Highlighted

A recent church-ordered document highlighted the "importance of a streamlined protocol for the resignation and/or removal of Church leaders or staff in cases of abuse or negligence."

The report also noted that survivors consistently emphasized the "critical requirement for bishops and senior officials to be made responsible for negligence and concealment."

Path Ahead

The representative revealed they told the pontiff at the start of their meeting: "This represents as much a challenge for him to engage in a dialogue as it was for us."

After the encounter, Hickey expressed optimism for future change.

"We understand it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the end of the day, uniting and building a connection and continuing to strengthen that relationship is a move in the correct path," Hickey stated.

Hickey added that they told with the pontiff: "Even though it's a difficult period, I believe like we can alter how the narrative ends - he valued that."
