The English and Wales Placed Together for the 2027 World Cup Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby icons such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side together with their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in the same group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a highly-anticipated pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw echoes their infamous meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground played a part in the hosts' shock group stage elimination.

Key Pool Draws

Ireland and the Scots also share a pool once again, replicating the scenario from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland secured a 36-14 win, with Scotland unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, who each made a strong impression as underdogs in France, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from holders and top-ranked South Africa before the showpiece match, assuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Tournament Implications

If the groups conclude in line with the current world rankings, other top favourites like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from the likes of England and the Irish all the way to the championship decider.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on the same side of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Hosts Australia find themselves alongside their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will open the World Cup in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a blockbuster match designed to launch the competition.

Elsewhere, holders South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. France are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and Canada as the tournament grows to 24 teams from the twenty who competed in France.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the winner of Pool F may avoid some of the game's biggest beasts early on, they will meet the second-placed team from Group B – probably the Italians – in the first knockout round.

Four of the other six pool winners will face a team that finished third from the pool stages.
