This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.
We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate scary movies: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like standard biological terror, but within Together resides a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love each other.
An Introductory Film Exploring The Nuances of Love
Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.
The story begins when Millie and Tim transition from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past typical partnership.
The entire film is a methodically building of scares, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.
Complex Characterizations
A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.
Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.
Both characters face the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.
Allegory and Meaning
While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama work together in a mutually beneficial way.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on right now.
Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
